What causes a light switch to stop working but light stays on?

A failed switch can stick closed, so the contacts keep the light on even when the toggle is “off.” Miswiring on a 3-way switch, a constant hot tied to the load, or a shorted connection at the switch/fixture can also bypass the switch. Loose backstabbed wires may feed the light around the switch. If multiple switches control the light, one miswired device can hold the circuit on. We troubleshoot and repair these issues, including breakers, panels, and wiring.

Quick checks:

• Try the other 3-way switch.
• Gently wiggle the toggle; note flicker.
• Do not open the box; call a licensed electrician.
